Job Description
General duties of a nurse in HA:
1. The fundamental responsibilities:
- Promotion of health
- Prevention of illness
- Alleviation of sufferings and
- Restoration of health.
2. To discharge these responsibilities, a nurse is generally required to perform the following duties:
- Provide patient care in a variety of settings
- Monitor and manage health care delivery to individuals, families, groups and community
- Act as educator, counselor, care coordinator, career support and discharge planner
- Establish therapeutic climate and safe environment for caring, healing and promotion of comfort and health.
- Participate as part of the multidisciplinary care team to meet the goals of patient care
- Support and participate in nursing and health care research activities and quality improvement activities.
3. Nurses in management positions manage the nursing and health care services at various levels. They are expected to participate in health policy formation, lead service development and guide clinical operations to improve the health status of the population.
4. Nurses in advanced practice positions perform a specialist role in a clinical specialty, providing advanced nursing care and act as a resource person to patients, relatives, staff and the public, as appropriate. They engage in research activities and promote evidence-based practice for the betterment of service.
5. Nurses responsible for nursing education and development are engaged either in pre-registration education or post-registration development through continuous learning to equip nurses with the necessary professional skills, knowledge and competence.
Entry Requirement
Enrolled Nurse (General)
1. A Certificate of Enrolment (Part I) and a valid Practising Certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.
2. Fluent Cantonese
Enrolled Nurse (Psychiatric)
1. A Certificate of Enrolment (Part II) and a valid Practising Certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.
2. Fluent Cantonese
Registered Nurse (General)
1. A Certificate of Registration (Part I) and a valid Practising Certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.
2. Fluent Cantonese
Registered Nurse (Psychiatric)
1. A Certificate of Registration (Part II) and a valid Practising Certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.
2. Fluent Cantonese
Advanced Practice Nurse
1. Holder of a valid Registered Nurse practicing certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.
2. Qualification in advanced nursing specialty*.
3. A degree in Nursing or equivalent.
4. 5 years or more post-registration experience in healthcare, of which at least 3 years is in the related specialty.
* Qualification in advanced nursing specialty refers to recognized post-registration certificate, or post-graduate certificate/diploma course in nursing specialty, or Master in nursing or related discipline with considerable coverage on a relevant nursing specialty.
Department Operations Manager
1. Holder of a valid Registered Nurse practicing certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.
2. Qualification in advanced nursing specialty *.
3. A Master degree in nursing or related discipline.
4. Qualification in management*.
5. 10 years or more post-registration experience of which at least 5 years is in a management role.
* (a) Qualification in advanced nursing specialty refers to recognized post-registration certificate, or post-graduate certificate/diploma course in nursing specialty, or Master in nursing or related discipline with considerable coverage on a relevant nursing specialty.
(b) Qualification in Management refers to post-graduate certificate/diploma or Master in health service related management, or Master in nursing or other discipline with considerable coverage on health service related management.
Nurse Consultant
1. Holder of a valid Registered Nurse practicing certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.
2. Qualification in advanced nursing specialty *.
3. A Master degree in nursing or related discipline.
4. 10 years or more post-registration experience of which at least 5 years is in the related clinical area.
* Qualification in advanced nursing specialty refers to recognized post-registration certificate, or post-graduate certificate/diploma course in nursing specialty, or Master in nursing or related discipline with considerable coverage on a relevant nursing specialty.
Career Path
- Advanced Practice Nurse after obtaining at least 5 years post-registration experience, preferably with a Master degree or Post-graduate diploma in a clinical nursing or related discipline/management together with recognized specialty training qualification.
- Ward Manager - APNs/NOs or RNs with supervisory/management ability and professional nursing practice knowledge may be advanced to the rank of WM to perform the role of a coordinator and supervisor in a ward/unit.
- Department Operations Manager/Senior Nursing Officer – WM/APNs with resources & management ability and professional nursing practice knowledge may be advanced to the rank of DOM/SNO to oversee the operations & administration of a department/unit.
- General Manager (Nursing) – a GM(N) acts as a member of the hospital management team and heads the hospital’s central nursing administration.
- Cluster General Manager (Nursing) – a CGM(N) oversees the operations and administration of all hospitals in the cluster and is a member of the cluster management team.

Enrolled Nurse (General)
A Certificate of Enrolment (Part I) and a valid Practising Certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.
Enrolled Nurse (Psychiatric)
A Certificate of Enrolment (Part II) and a valid Practising Certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.
Registered Nurse (General)
A Certificate of Registration (Part I) and a valid Practising Certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.
Registered Nurse (Psychiatric)
A Certificate of Registration (Part II) and a valid Practising Certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.

(a) Enrolled Nurse Training Programme which qualifies successful graduates for statutory registration as Registered Nurses with Hong Kong Nursing Council.

Job Description
Allied health professionals form the back bone of HA’s clinical
services team. In collaboration with doctors and nurses, allied health
professionals provide direct clinical services to patients. In view of the
differences in expertise required, allied health professionals are organized
into 3 streams. These include:
(a) Technology;
(b) Rehabilitation; and
(c) Pharmacy.
Entry Requirement
Audiology Technician II
- A Certificate of Audiology Technicians’ training course from an institution recognised by the British Association of Audiology Technicians or the British Society of Audiology; or equivalent.
- A Certificate of Qualifying Examinations from the British Association of Audiology Technicians or the British Society of Audiology (Audiology Technicians Group); or equivalent.
Clinical psychologist
- A Master or Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from a local university; or equivalent.
- Grade E in English Language (Syllabus B) and Chinese Language in the HKCEE, or equivalent.
- Fluency in written English and Chinese as well as spoken English and Cantonese.
Dietitian
- A Master degree or a post-graduate diploma in a recognised dietetic programme conducted in a local university, or equivalent.
Dispenser
- A Certificate in Dispensing Studies from Vocation Training Council, or equivalent AND 3-year on-the-job training organised by Hospital Authority OR 3 years' on-the job training in dispensing in recognised institutions 1 year of which should be post-certificate.
- OR a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from an institution recognised by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Hong Kong for registration.
- OR a Higher Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education [fomerly Hong Kong Technical College (Chai Wan), Vocational Training Council] registration.

Associate Medical Technologist
- A B.Sc. degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent.

Occupational Therapist II
- A B.Sc./ B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Occupational Therapy or equivalent.

Pharmacist
- A Certificate of Registration and a valid Practising Certificate issued by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, Hong Kong.
- 4 years’ post-registration experience as a pharmacist or 2 years’ postregistration experience as a pharmacist plus a relevant postgraduate professional degree or equivalent.
Physicist
- A Master degree in Physics (General, Medical, Radiation, Health or Applied Physics) or Engineering (Electronic, Electrical, Computer, Microwave, Biomedical, Telecommunications or Medical Electronic Engineering) from a local university, or equivalent, and
- Two years’ Resident Physicist training in HA.
- OR A Corporate Member of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (Electrical or Electronic Disciplines) elected on or after 5 December 1975 or the Institution of Engineering and Technology, UK.
Physiotherapist II
- A B.Sc. / B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Physiotherapy or equivalent.
- Be registered as a Physiotherapist in Part 1b/1a of the Register of Physiotherapists under the Supplementary Medical Professions Ordinance and have a valid Practicing Certificate issued by the Physiotherapists Board, Hong Kong.
Podiatrist II
- A degree in Podiatry, Podiatric Medicine or Podiatric Studies, or equivalent.
